WONDER BOY IN MONSTER LAND

The original game was released in the arcade in 1987 by Westone and Sega. One year later the Master System version came out. Featuring the same elements as the arcade game. In 1987 a simular game was released for the pc-engine. Basically the game is the same, but it was produced by Hudson soft. The character names, bosses and some level lay-outs are different. I'm not sure if the game was ever translated to english. The Master System game was also released in Japan as Super Wonder Boy: Monster World. This page is made around the Master System & Arcade game, however the most information can also be used for the pc-engine version.

REVIEW

Wonder Boy in Monster land is the second release in the series. This time you fight monsters with your sword and you're able to buy armory, shields, boots and sub-weapons with the coins dropped by monsters.

The game is still linear. There are 12 rounds. The most rounds have shops and bars. In the bars you can learn some secrets.
You only have one live and start the game with 5 hearts. When you buy a better armor this number will increase.

I like this game more than the original because there's more variety in game play and graphics. You not only have to kill monsters, but you also have to decide which equipment you want to buy and search for secret doors. It's a pretty tough game to complete and will keep you busy for a while.

ROUND 1
Enter the house of the fortune teller by pressing up in front of the door. After he has informed you about your journey, a moving platform will appear. Jump on the tree trunk to get some extra gold. Left from the bar you can find some other gold. Defeat the monster to get the key to the next round.

ROUND 2
Buy some goods, if you want to, in this village. Jump around to get some extra coins. A fortune teller hides himself in the cave. After a while you'll see a lava pit. press up on one of the platforms nearby to enter his hideout. He will give you the Scroll to Catherine. Fight the boss monster a little bit further in the cave to get the Broad Sword. Jump on the roof of his hide out to get some extra gold. The key to open the port of the Red Knight's castle is in the hands of a boss monster.

ROUND 3
At the end of the first part wait until it's save to climb the ladder. There's a secret armor shop in this castle. It's left from the arrow shooting goblin. Defeat the Red Knight to get to the next round.

ROUND 4
Make your way to the village of Baraboro and deliver the scroll to Catherine. You can find her by entering a secret door above the bar. Proceed to the left and fight the boss, he'll give you a key. If you think you have enough power left to fight him again then go a little to the right and jump in the water. In the shop over there you can buy a potion if you haven't one. Go to the right to get back to the surface and enter the room of the big squid again. Defeat him and he will give you a big heart and some money.

ROUND 5
Jump in the trees to receive extra money. Fall into the well at the end. There's a secret door here which lead to a boss. It's located near the 3rd spitting creature. After defeating the boss you'll get the Great Sword. Enter the bar near the desert and order twice ale (to most expensive drink), Jack the bar keeper will give a letter to Betty. On your way to the pyramid you'll fall into a cave where the key of the pyramid lies. defeat all the bats to get to the surface again.

ROUND 6
Jump on the upper platform at the end of the first part with the spikes to enter a secret shop. There are 2 other secret shops in this round. The armor shop is located under the spot where you start the second part and the boots shop is near the bar. This pyramid is the property of the Sphinx. He likes to play quizzes. To get a clue enter the bar and order ale twice. Note that the answers to the questions of the Sphinx can be different all the time.

ROUND 7
Defeat the boss monster in the village to get Excallibur. Enter the house at the right end of the village. After that, get back and jump on the moving platform to leave the town. Defeat the boss to get the key to next round. But before leaving this round walk to the right. Climb on the cliff and you will play the flute automatically, now proceed to the right and enter the mansion. Jump on the moving platform and press up to enter the room of the old goat. He will give you the Charm of Star. Leave the mansion and get back to the port. Battle the boss again to get a heart and some extra gold.

ROUND 8
You can get to 2 different locations. Go to the right to reach the ghost town or fall into the gab to skip the town. The most shops you'll find in the ghost town are closed. A secret door leads to a boss, defeat him to get 10 thunders. Medusa's room is hidden above one of the lava pits in the cave.

ROUND 9
There's a secret door on the platform near the blue ghost in the cave. Enter it and defeat the boss to get the Sword of Legend.

ROUND 10
Inside this frosty palace are many hidden stores, but they aren't too hard to find.

ROUND 11
Underwater you'll find a shop where shields are sold. Enter the shop and leave it, then enter it again to meet the great Catfish. He will give you the Hero Emblem. Jump into the lava at the end of the cave. The fortune teller will give you a bell or a red ruby. The bell makes it easier to find your way through the castle. It rings when your going the right way. The ruby makes the Dragon weaker. I suggest to take the ruby because I will explain the way through the castle below.

ROUND 12
This castle is one big maze. If you choose the wrong path you have to start at the begin again. Follow the instructions below to reach the dragon.

Walk to right until you reach the moving platform, choose the lower path.

Walk to the left and fall into the gab.

Fall into the right gab.

Now you should see a red ghost. Walk to the left.

Fall into the gab.

Land of the right platform.

Fall into the gab.

Go right again.

The first enemy you should see is a red knight. Walk to the moving platform and jump on it to get up.

Jump constantly on the 2 small platforms to get up (4 rooms) If you fall, go back to the red knight and defeat him. The moving platform will now reappear.

Walk to the left and take the upper road.

Go left.

Go left.

Fall into the gab.

Land on the right platform.

Fall into the gab

Fall down until you reach the bottom.

Go right.

You should now see crabs. Fall into the gab .

Fall until you reach the bottom.

Go left to reach the dragon's lair.

 

THE DRAGON
If you got the ruby, you only need one hit to defeat him. Now the dragon will turn into Meka Dragon. With a big amount of lightning or fireballs you'll make the best change.
