WONDER BOY

RELEASES

I don't know on which computer this game was released first. I've read about a release on the SG-3000. But I hardly know anything about this console, so I don't know for sure. The arcade could also be the first (I played the game in the arcade for the first time). Anyway in 1986 Wonder Boy was released for the arcade. Later, in 1987, a Master System conversion came out. Known as Super Wonder Boy in Japan. Graphically the arcade game was superior, but it had good graphics for an 8-bit game. When the Game Gear was introduced a Game Gear version was released. In an early US Game Gear flyer the game was called Revenge of Drancon. I guess they turned it into Wonder Boy again.

You might have heard of Adventure Island, the Wonder Boy-a-like series for the Nintendo consoles. They were developed by Hudson soft. I think Hudson bought the idea of Wonder Boy from Westone or Sega. Several other Wonder Boy clones where released. I know of a clone for the MSX, developed by Star Frontiers in 1988.

REVIEW

Tanya has been kidnapped by the evil Drancon and only Tom-Tom can save her. Wonder Boy has to travel through 14 different areas with each 4 rounds. At the end of each area you have to fight a boss.

Wonder Boy can kill enemies by throwing axes. You have to collect fruit and other food to stay healthy. On your way you can ride a skateboard which can help you to pass dangerous areas.

When I first played it in the arcades, I liked it a lot, later I bought the Master System conversion and played the game for days until I had finally completed this tough game. Now I think it's still a good game, but it can get boring after a while. So I prefer Super Adventure Island, which has more variety in levels, but still the same game play.

LEVEL SKIP (Master System)

Press a button to start the game, at the following screen press button-1 twice then button-2 twice, then hold down both buttons. Press right or left to change the round and up or down to change the area. Note that you can't select area 10.

LEVEL SKIP (Game Gear)

Press down and start at the titlescreen. Press up or down to change your starting area.

THE DOLLS

In each round you can find a doll. You have to collect all dolls to reach area 10 and play 4 extra levels. If you haven't collect them all the game ends (the same as the end you get after completing round 10) after defeating the boss of area 9. The extra levels have dolls too, but it isn't necessary to get them. 2 Of them are hidden under flames. Some of the dolls are hidden beyond rocks. Throw your hammer on the rocks to see if they are special. If your hammer falls through them, then often a doll is hidden under the rock.
